He walked over to the edge of the boat and put one leg over the edge, preparing to slide his whole body in. Nothing in the world seemed to matter more than him joining the sirens among the waves. One of them looked at him, flashed him a charming smile, and beckoned for him to get in the water. They laughed together in the water, and the sound blended with their singing. It filled his mind, driving all thoughts away. It was a jumble of notes and a clear tune at the same time somehow. Had she done something her father hadn't approved of and was being forced to watch this as punishment?īut then, all thoughts fled from his mind as the sirens lifted their heads from the water and sang the first note of their song. Since she was tied up, she wasn't in danger from the siren song. She had a look of panic on her face one that Jothan knew was not for himself, but for the men who were about to be killed in front of her. She was the king's eldest daughter, Princess Sara, the heir to the throne. His eyes fell upon something he hadn't noticed before: a girl, about one year his junior, tied to the ship's mast. Jothan continued to scan the ship, trying to do something to get his mind off of the dark shapes which were now circling the boat. The only reason he was on this ship was because of a simple misunderstanding, one that he was now going to die for. He was a simple farm boy, not a criminal. Most of them looked dangerous Jothan saw men with missing teeth, hooks for hands, and patches over their eyes. ![]() They were punishment for the lowest of criminals: the murderers, the assassins, or whoever the king deemed worthy of death.įor the first time, Jothan took a quick moment to survey the others with him on the boat. He had heard horror stories of what they did to their victims, luring them into the water with their song and then drowning them. Even the sea breeze seemed to carry a sinister voice that whispered in his ear: This is the end.Ī dark shape darted beneath the boat. In Jothan's mind, the smell of the ocean was the smell of death and the mist that drenched him felt like cold hands clawing at his skin. Occasionally, spray from the waves slapping the sides of the boat would raise a fine mist that would coat him and everyone else on the ship with small, glimmering droplets of water.īut the knowledge of where they were going seemed to taint the beauty of the day with something ugly-even something evil. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and a gentle sea breeze ruffled his hair. Under normal circumstances, he would be thrilled to be sailing on a day like this.
